The New Student Union building represents the Student Union, Inc.’s long-held desire to create a unified location for students to come and experience campus life. Once completed, the new building will house more services than any other building on campus and will reconsolidate and relocate many services so that they are more accessible and make more sense to students. Below is a complete list and brief description of every facility that will be in the New Student Union.

  • Associated Students Government – Student-run government operations will be moved from the A.S. House into the new facilities, in a continued effort to harbor cross-department collaboration.
  • Atrium – A natural light, earth-tone atrium will span all three floors of the renovated Student Union.
  • Balcony – Connecting the top floor of the expansion and renovation portions of the Student Union will be a balcony overlooking the dining area.
  • Ballroom
    • Ballroom – The new ballroom will nearly double in size from the Barrett Ballroom
    • Pre-Ballroom – Additionally, a staging area outside the primary ballroom will be perfect for pre- and post-event hosting.
  • Bowling Center – Staying in the same location, the popular Bowling Center will get a facelift and have updated facilities.
  • Cesar Chavez Community Action Center – Returning to the Student Union, this community-focused organization will get a permanent home.
  • Computer Services Center – This computer center will receive new space specially built for its specific computer-related needs.
  • Event Scheduling – Finally, the university will have a consolidated one-stop scheduling location.
    • Event Services – Now centrally located, the Event Services Office will be a hub for students, faculty, staff, or the public to schedule their events on the SJSU campus.
    • Spartan Catering – No longer do event schedulers need to wander from office to office across campus. All of these services will now be in a single location.
  • General Services Center & Transportation Solutions – Expanding to meet growing student needs, General Services will get an easy-to-find location.
  • Information Center – Moving to the center of the building, the Information Center will remain ready to answer all incoming questions.
  • International & Extended Studies – Finally getting a home on campus, IES will occupy two floors on the western end of the building along 7th Street.
  • Spartan Café – Featuring easy-to-access internet, LCD screens, and a comfortable atmosphere, this café is poised to be a campus hot spot for years to come.
  • LGBT Center – The Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender Center will get its own space on the main floor of the new building.
  • MOSAIC – The cross-cultural center will get all-new digs located more prominently on the main floor.
  • Meeting Rooms – Meeting space in the Student Union will almost double as the Barrett Ballroom will be fully converted into smaller meeting units.
  • Print Shop – The Print Shop will have a permanent home with an easy-to-find storefront.
  • Spartan Bookstore – Staying right where it’s always been, the Bookstore will receive a general face lift and facility upgrade.
  • Spartan Food Court – On-campus food will suddenly be more varietal as Spartan Dining moves to the expansion section of the New Student Union. New equipment and more space will greatly improve the student and community dining experience.
  • Student Involvement – Finally, student organizations will have a permanent, spacious home for their operations when Student Involvement moves in.

  • Theatre & Lecture Hall – The old outdoor amphitheater will be converted into a modern indoor theater-style lecture hall with over 300 seats.
  • Women’s Resource Center –The WRC will be located among the cluster of student resource centers in the center of the renovated Student Union.
